ABSTRACT
Due to COVID-19 pandemic, three non-pharmaceutical protocols as frequent washing of hands, wearing of face masks and social distancing were introduced in Nigeria. To endure social distancing, schools and all other social activities in Nigeria were shutdown in March 2020.Teaching and learning in schools moved from traditional face to face teaching method to virtual. This study sought to find out the effect of COVID -19 lockdown on academics and social life as perceived by Basic Science students in junior secondary schools in Benin City. Four research questions and corresponding four hypotheses guided the study.
The design for the study was a descriptive survey. A sample of 100 students participated in the study. A questionnaire on students’ perception of the effect of the COVID-19 lockdown on students’ academic performance was used for data collection. The instrument was a modified Likert-type with four-point scale. The instrument consisted of two sections A and B. Section A was on biodata while B was on academic activities and social life. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive and t-test statistics.
Results from the descriptive statistics show that students from private schools’ (Mean = 15.35) perception is that the pandemic affected their academics unlike students from public schools (Mean = 15.17). Students from both public and private schools’ perception is that the pandemic affected their social life (Mean = 13.50). However, when the hypotheses were tested results showed no significant difference in the perception of students from public and private Junior Secondary Schools on the effect of COVID-19 on academics and social life. Similarly, no significant difference was found in the perception of male and female students in public and private Junior Secondary Schools on the effect of COVID-19 on academics and social life. It was therefore recommended that Government should improve and motivate students in public schools to accept the importance of academics.
