ABSTRACT

The research investigated the Teacher computer Literacy among the Secondary School Teachers and ICT Integration in Ugbowo. This was done based on three research objectives of establishing the level of computer literacy among Secondary School teachers, assessing their attitudes towards integration of ICT into teaching and learning, and identifying the possible remedies for integrating ICT into secondary school   teaching and learning.

A descriptive research design based on both qualitative and quantitative data was used. Factors such as unavailability of ICT equipment, inadequate training and limited exposure were identified to be greatly contributing towards incompetence in ICT. This was compounded by the attitudinal factors such as fear of losing jobs when computers are introduced in schools and lower self confidence in computer use. There was generally, no school that had fully adopted the use of computers and any form of ICT integration during the teaching and learning processes. That notwithstanding, it was revealed that the teachers appreciate the role of ICT in the modern world.

In order to improve the computer literacy level among the teachers in Ugbowo and hence ICT integration in these schools, the study recommends that the government, through the relevant ministry, and the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development must work on a generally acceptable ICT content to be introduced and examined at the teacher training colleges while those teachers already in service should also be encouraged to attend private classes, besides the in-service courses the Government may organize for them.

It further recommends that both levels of the government, the National and the County governments, should build ICT resource centres where, not only teachers, but the citizens can access the use of computers at subsidized costs. This will further improve exposure.
