ABSTRACT
The study established the Effect of Computer Assisted Instruction on students’ academic achievement in Basic Technology in Ogun State, Nigeria. Three research questions were raised and three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. This study adopted the quasi-experimental design specifically; the pre-test, post-test, non-equivalent groups design. The population of the study comprised of one thousand, seven hundred and seventy-five (1,775) Basic 8 (JSS2) students in sixteen junior secondary schools in Ado-odo Ota Local Government area of Ogun State. Two hundred and eighteen (218) Basic 8 students selected through multi-stage sampling from four junior secondary schools in Ado-odo Ota Local Government area of Ogun State were used as sample. Two of the schools with 109 students were used as control group while the other two also with 109 students were used as experimental group. The instrument used for data collection was a validated 40 multiple choice items Hydraulic and Pneumatic Achievement Test (HPMAT) for both pre-test and post-test. A reliability coefficient of 0.78 was obtained using test-retest reliability technique and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The result of the pre-test and post-test were analyzed using Mean, Standard Deviation, Independent t-test and ANCOVA statistics. The findings showed that, the experimental group taught basic technology with CAI learning package had a higher academic achievement than those taught with conventional teaching method, there was a significant difference in the mean achievement scores of post-test and pre-test group exposed to CAI method of teaching in basic technology, with a mean difference of 12.52 and 11.47, the study also established that the male students exposed to CAI have slight edge over their female counterparts, there was no significance difference in the mean achievement scores between male and female students exposed to CAI learning package. Based on the findings, it was recommended amidst others things that basic technology teachers should be trained in the use of computer packages in teaching basic technology teachers through workshops, seminars and induction courses organized by the Ministry of Education.
