ABSTRACT

The study determined the effect of computer aided design on academic performance of clothing and textile students in colleges of education in Lagos State. Five research questions were raised to guide the study and fiver null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance for the study. The quasi-experimental research design which utilized non-randomized pre-test, post-test experimental-control group design was employed. The population of the study was 168 300level home economics students in seven colleges of education in Lagos State. Purposive sampling was employed to arrive at the sample size of the study which was 20 students. The instrument used for data collection was adapted from past examination questions titled Multiple Choice Questions for Fashion Designing, Garments and Merchandising Job and Computer Aided Pattern Making past questions from both Mazharul (2017) and Balakumar (2016) for both pre-test and post-test. The instrument used was validated by three experts. Kuder Richardson Formula 20 was used to compute reliability of the instrument which yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.84.The result of the pre-test and post-test were analyzed using Mean, Standard Deviation, Independent t-test and ANCOVA statistics. The findings revealed that: the mean score of computer aided drafting method was higher in post-test group than the pre-test group, the mean score of computer aided drafting method was higher in pre-test group than the pre-test group of conventional method, computer aided design group had a higher mean achievement score than those taught with the conventional method in the post-test scores, the female students had a higher mean achievement scores than the male students, mean difference of male students taught with both groups and the mean difference for female students taught with both methods were in favour of the computer aided design group, there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test of students exposed to the Computer Aided Design drafting, there is a significant difference between the pre-test mean scores of students taught with Computer Aided Design Drafting and those taught with conventional method of drafting, there is a significant difference between the post-test mean scores of students taught with Computer Aided Design Drafting and those taught with conventional method of drafting, there is no significant difference in the mean scores between male and female Clothing and Textiles students taught with Computer Aided Design Drafting, there is no significant difference between the interaction effect of teaching method and gender on students’ academic performance in Clothing and Textiles. Based on the findings, it was concluded that computer aided drafting method of teaching is an essential method of teaching that will improve the academic achievement of pattern drafting students than the conventional method of teaching. Resulting from this study, it was recommended among others that computer aided drafting method of teaching should be used as a method of instructional strategy in pattern drafting in Colleges of Education in place of the prevalent conventional method. Government and other stake holders in educational sector should make available grants, loans and scholarship to interested students and institutions for further research work on the use of computer aided drafting methods and strategies in classroom instruction to better enhance good performance of students in their learning career. Suggestions were made for further studies.
