ABSTRACT

Mushrooms are well known for their nutritional value because they are rich sources of vitamins proteins and minerals. Marasmiellus inoderma and Pleurotus ostreatus are edible mushrooms cultivated or collected for food and medicines. This study was conducted to determine the effect of carbon sources on the vegetative growth of Pleurotus ostreatus and Marasmiellus inoderma in the laboratory. Pure cultures of Marasmiellus inoderma and Pleurotus ostreatus were inoculated in Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) supplemented with different sugars (carbon sources).Six selected carbon sources which include Glucose, Maltose, Sucrose, Cellulose, Lactose and Starch were employed as carbon sources for the growth of Marasmiellus inoderma and Pleurotus ostreatus. The daily mycellial extension was recorded, and the biomass, cultural characteristics were recorded. All the carbon sources promoted of the mushrooms. Maltose had the highest growth for Marasmiellus inoderma (85.39 ± 2.67mm) and Lactose had the least (24.16 ±5.66mm) growth. For Pleurotus ostreatus, Maltose also had the highest growth (28.83±1.79mm) and Lactose had the least growth (19.00±0.82mm). The most suitable carbon source Maltose had the highest biomass production for Marasmiellus inoderma (30.33±1.09mm) followed by starch (29.58 ± 4.80mm) and the least was lactose (6.37 ± 5.40mm). For Pleurotus ostreatus, Maltose had the highest biomass production (7.20±0.95mm) followed by starch (6.54±9.95mm) and the least was lactose (4.75±0.44mm). The morphological characteristics and density of the mycelial of Pleurotus ostreatus and Marasmiellus inoderma were observed in the course of study. The morphological feature of Pleurotus ostreatus and Marasmiellus inoderma was either wooly, fluffy, and slightly fluffy in the various nutrient sources, while the density was either dense, sparse, very sparse, or very dense. From this study, it is concluded that the most suitable carbon sources for the growth of the two mushrooms, Marasmiellus inoderma and Pleurotus ostreatus is maltose while the most suitable carbon sources for biomass production is Maltose and Sucrose.
