ABSTRACT
The use of calcium carbide is as an artificial fruit-ripening agent is popular in many part of the world including Nigeria. There are reports on the presence of some impurities from this chemical in drinking water. The aim of this study was to examine the possible effects of calcium carbide ingestion on total and differential white blood cell of male Wistar rats. Seventy (70) male Wistar rats weighing between 140-240g were used for this study. Results were analyzed using Mythic 18 Haematology. Differences between the means of the groups were compared using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Data was presented as mean ± SEM. A value of p<0.05 were considered to indicate a statistical difference. Results showed that the ingestion of calcium carbide showed statistically significant differences in differential white blood cell count for all low dose (0.96 mg/Kg BW), Medium dose (1.93 mg/Kg BW) and High dose (2.88 mg/Kg BW) of dissolved calcium carbide. Therefore, ingestion of calcium carbide may cause alteration in immune function of male wistar rats.
