ABSTRACT

Background: Undergraduate physiotherapy students represent a group of young-adults expected to have a good working knowledge of physical activity and related health benefits. Therefore, as identified as key role players in health promotion, improving the health and well-being of communities by functioning both as role models and facilitators of behaviour change consistent with public health priorities However, engaging in Sport Activities and exercise itself is beneficial for students to gain knowledge and facilitate learning while developing insights into the future challenges that they will face when implementing strategic health promotion in practice Therefore, it is of great significance that medical schools increase the proportion of students maintaining and adopting regular physical and sport activities habits in order to increase the quality and rates of future physical and sport counseling delivered by physiotherapist. Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the factors influencing participation in sporting activity among physiotherapy students in University of Benin Methods: A convenience sampling was used to select 200 students from 200 level to 500 level in physiotherapy department of University of Benin Results: The rate of participation in sports among physiotherapy students was observed that over 39% of respondents were engaging in sports activity with football being the sport most engaged in (40, 51.2 %). Male physiotherapy (100%) were more actively involved in sports than their female counterpart (95%) with 181 (90.5%) respondents attributing it to the competitive nature of the sporting activities involved. There was no significant association between the factors that affect participation in sporting activities and engagement in sporting activities among physiotherapy students Conclusion: The prevalence of sports activities among physiotherapy students was in favor of the male students as against their female counterparts with the degree of gender stereotyping, thus affecting the rate of participations. No one factor showed a significant association with rate of sport participation among undergraduate physiotherapy students. Keywords: Sports activity, Physiotherapy students.
