ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus remains a global health concern, necessitating ongoing research into effective, affordable, and sustainable treatment options. This experimental study was carried out to investigate the potential antidiabetic properties of the bi-herbal formulation comprising of Vernonia amygdalina (VA) and Chromolaena odorata (CO), two traditionally used medicinal plants with reported hypoglycemic effects. The leaves of VA and CO were collected, dried, and processed into a powdered form. A bi-herbal formulation was prepared by combining equal ratios of VA and CO powders and extracted with distilled water using cold maceration method. Male and female albino rats were induced with diabetes using Streptozotocin and then orally administered the bi-herbal formulation for a period of fourteen days. Key parameters such as fasting blood glucose levels, and markers of oxidative stress weight index were assessed. The results of this study revealed a significant reduction in fasting blood glucose levels in normoglycemic and diabetic rats treated with the bi-herbal formulation compared to the diabetic control group. Additionally, the formulation demonstrated an improvement of liver function and lipid profile levels. Furthermore, the bi-herbal formulation exhibited reduction in oxidative stress markers. These findings suggest that the bi-herbal formulation of Vernonia amygdalina and Chromolaena odorata possesses promising Antidiabetic potential. The observed hypoglycemic effects warrant further investigation into the underlying mechanisms and clinical applications of this formulation as a complementary approach in the management of diabetes mellitus. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the therapeutic value of traditional medicinal plants and underscores the importance of exploring bi-herbal formulations as potential treatments for diabetes and related metabolic disorders.
