ABSTRACT

Aspartame is 180-200 times sweeter than sucrose and consumed by people in amounts they are unaware of due to its use as a sweetner in man , low calorie drinks as well as drugs for children. The safety of this sweetner in different organs is still very questionable due to conflicting result in literature. This study therefore aims to investigate the effect of aspartame of some electrolyte. A total of twenty (20) female Sprague Dawley rats were used in this study. After acclimatization for two weeks, the rats were separated into two major groups; the control group which contained five (5) rats (n=5) that were given normal feed and water, and the test group which was divided into three groups with 5 rats each (n=5); Low dose- LD (50mg), Mid dose- MD (75mg) and High dose - HD (100mg) of aspartame. The test groups were administered with aspartame for 12weeks. The duration of the experiment was 12 weeks. Blood sample were collected after administration, and was placed inside a plain bottles. Data was analyzed using graphpad statistical software version 9.5 and results analyzed were presented in mean ±sem. A t test was used to compare the control and each experimental group. P-value (p < 0.05 ) was considered statistically significant. Results showed no statistical significant difference in any of the groups compared with control for blood-sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, chloride, urine-potassium .There was a significant difference in urine sodium, bicarbonate, chloride levels. In conclusion, there was no significant difference in groups administered aspartame when compared with control during the duration of this study. However, a long term study might show otherwise.
