ABSTRACT
This study determines the effect of aqueous extract Cyperus esculentus (tigernut) extract on cadmium induced changes in testicular antioxidant parameters in rats. Animals were divided into five groups and administered different doses as follows: group 1 was used as control group, group 2 was administered 3 ml/kg of Cadmium only once, group 3 was administered the aqueous extract Cyperus esculentus 4 ml/kg daily, group 4 was administered dose of 3 ml/kg of cadmium and 2 ml/kg of Cyperus esculentus (tigernut) daily and group 5 was administered dose of 3 ml/kg of Cadmium and 4 ml/kg of Cyperus esculentus extract (tigernut) daily. The Cyperus esculentus extract was administered daily by oral gavage for 28 days and the extract was prepared fresh and given to the rats. The toxicant was administered once which was the first day of the study intravenously and normal group was given normal saline once. The effect of the different dose was observed that the cadmium exposed has an increased level when compared to control group in the testicular antioxidant parameters. There was decrease in the body weight and percentage weight when compared to the control group.
