ABSTRACT
The study was designed to examine the nature of services delivered by the Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (EDSPHCDA) in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The specific objectives of the study include to; examine the extent to which healthcare service delivery by EDSPHCDA has reduced incidences of illness in Egor Local Government Area, examine the extent to which community participation has encouraged access to primary health care in Egor Local Government Area, examine the extent to which financial allocation by EDSPHCDA has improved health care facilities in Egor Local Government Area, and examine the extent to which the human resource development by EDSPHCDA has improved the quality of health workers in Egor Local Government Area. The study adopted the survey research design. The population of the study of this research is made up of the 735 members of staff of EDSPHCDA/Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) and the 150,810 residents of the Uwelu, Uselu and Evbuotubu communities in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State making a total population of 151,545. The sample size of the study was 300 which was drawn from the population of the study. The instrument used to collect data was the questionnaire which was administered to the study sampled respondents. Out of the 300 questionnaires distributed, 289 copies were retrieved. The data collected was analyzed using the Simple Percentage (%), ChiSquare (X2 ), and Pearson Contingency Coefficient (C). The study revealed amongst others that, primary health care in Egor Local Government Area has been poorly funded. The study therefore concluded that despite the remarkable achievement by EDSPHCDA in reducing the cases of illnesses in the local government area under review, poor funding has continued to inhibit a holistic and comprehensive health improvement in Egor Local Government Area. Furthermore, policy recommendations were proffered which include amongst others that, the State and Local Governments should increase budgetary allocation and subventions to primary health care in Edo State.
