ABSTRACT
There is a pressing need to increase broiler output in Nigeria in order to meet the inadequate supply of animal protein. An awareness of the relationship between input and output will stimulate the farmers to improve on their existing methods of production. This study examined the Economic Analysis among Small Scale Broiler farmers in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. Information was gathered from 100 farmers and analyzed to describe the socio-economic characteristics and farming operations of farmers in the study area, estimate their cost implications and returns to broiler production, estimate the technical and allocative efficiency and identify the constraints to increased broiler production in the study area. Two stage random sampling technique was used to select the communities and the farmers. The primary data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics such as mean, percentages, frequency distribution, farm budgetary analytical tools and stochastic frontier production function.
The result showed that majority (98%) of the farmers were educated and feed was the most expensive input. The result further showed that about 111 birds each were realized by each farmer with total revenue of N893,106.00. The gross margin was N55,339.18. Maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters of the stochastic frontier production functions showed that all the coefficients of the variables of the production function were positive. The estimated production coefficient of feed intake was 2.358 and it was significant at 1%. Stock size was 3.005 and was significant at 5. The respondents were operating at increasing returns to scale (stage 1 of the production function) as shown by the summation of the elasticities of the inputs which was greater than one (7.254).
