ABSTRACT

This research examines the economic influence of terrorism in Nigeria. Terrorism is the biggest threat to global peace and stability in the contemporary times. Since the dawn of this millennium, the incidence of the terrorism has been on a steady rise worldwide. The research discusses the nature of terrorism in Nigeria. It discusses the different terrorist groups in Nigeria, from the Niger Delta Militants, Boko Haram, Fulani herdsmen and Shiite Muslims. It has been shown that terrorism activities in Nigeria have affected Nigeria’s socio-economic activities, the presence of terrorism in any environment constitutes threat to lives and properties, hinders business activities, and discourages local and foreign investors, all of which stifles and retards socio-economic development of a country. Terrorism in Nigeria has retarded socio-economic development by heightened citizenship question which encourages hostility between “indigenes” and “settlers”, dislocation and disruption of family and communal life, dehumanization of women children and men especially in areas where child abuse and neglect are used as instruments of war. This research therefore recommends that Nigeria must start to view terrorism as a deadly reality of our time. To combat terrorism, the securities agencies stand in the warfront and can only perform where a lot of resources have been dedicated into the needs of the various security outfits. There should be public enlightenment so that terrorist will realized that they are agent of economic destruction.
