ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to assess the profitability of small scale broiler production in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state. Fifty (50) poultry farmers were selected from a list obtained from the agricultural development programme (ADP) in the state branch and administered questionnaire. Means, percentage, frequency count and budgetary analysis were used for the study.
The result showed that the sex of the respondents who are into broiler production is equally distributed with mean age of 48 years old and household size of 5 persons. The result showed that the broiler farmer in the study area have 8 years farming experience, majority (98.6%) of the respondents were married and had completed tertiary education. The result showed that majority (64%) of the respondents used their personal saving for broiler production, majority (58%) of the respondents had farm size between 100 – 300ft and majority of the respondent use family labour in broiler production. The result showed that the variable cost for broiler production amount to N1,753,986.5 and fixed constitute N141,195.8. The total revenue (TR) generated from broiler production amounts to N3,233,20. In this study, the profit of N1,479,833.5indicates that the production of broiler is a profitable venture in study Area. The return on investment (ROI) for broiler production in this study is 7.076. The result implies that the economic analysis of small scale broiler production in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, demonstrates that this agricultural activity is financially viable, with a significant return on investment of approximately 7.07. The result showed that pest and disease management (mean = 3.32) was a serious constraints facing broiler production in the study area. The result indicated that high mortality rate (mean = 3.7), theft (mean = 3.89) and poor patronage (mean = 3.9) were serious constraints facing broiler production in the study area.
