ABSTRACT

The agricultural sector in Nigeria possess great opportunities for agricultural development. However, the fish subsector still performs far below expectation. The study is on economic analysis of fish farming and technical efficiency of catfish farmers in Orumba North Local Government Area (L.G.A), Anambra State, Nigeria. This is with the view of analyzing the factors that influence this efficiency. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to collect data from 96 fish farmers using a well-structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and the stochastic production frontier function were used in data analysis. The study revealed that the selling price per 1.5 kg of fish was between ₦1,100 and ₦2,099. The total revenue from fish farming per production cycle was ₦2,418,859.38. the net profit was estimated at ₦1,183,792.54 with a gross margin of ₦1,426,764.22. Also, quantity of fish feed and cost of fuel had positive and significant influence on catfish output. The study found technical efficiencies of the farmers to vary from 0.06 to 0.96 with a mean of 0.74. Furthermore, farmers’ educational level (0.05) was found to reduce farmer’s technical inefficiency. The study recommends that effort should be geared towards building capacity of catfish farmers since education was found to be positively associated with increased technical efficiency.
