Abstract

This economic analysis delves into the intricacies of catfish production in the Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. Through a comprehensive examination of demographic characteristics, profitability, determinants of profit, and constraints faced by catfish farmers, the study uncovers valuable insights crucial for understanding the dynamics of the catfish farming sector in the region. The demographic analysis reveals a predominant presence of middle-aged individuals engaged in fish farming activities, with varying household sizes and levels of experience among farmers. Despite facing challenges such as financial constraints, theft, and inadequate government assistance, catfish production in the area remains profitable, highlighting the resilience of farmers in navigating adversities. Regression analysis further identifies the key determinants of profit in catfish production, emphasizing the critical role of managing costs, particularly those related to fish stock and labor. Strategies aimed at optimizing these costs are essential for enhancing profitability and ensuring the economic sustainability of catfish farming enterprises. Moreover, the study sheds light on the constraints confronting catfish farmers, including financial limitations, security concerns, inadequate government support, high transportation costs, and preservation challenges. Addressing these constraints requires collaborative efforts and targeted interventions from stakeholders across various sectors to create a conducive environment for sustainable growth and development in the catfish farming sector.

By implementing targeted interventions aimed at addressing the identified constraints and leveraging the key determinants of profit, stakeholders can unlock the full potential of catfish production as a vital contributor to food security, economic development, and rural livelihoods in Nigeria. This study underscores the importance of understanding the multifaceted factors influencing catfish production and the necessity for holistic approaches to foster resilience and sustainability in the sector
