SUMMARY

This study examined dysfunctional political representatives and underdevelopment in Nigeria using Ijumu, Kogi state a case study. It found that politics and governance have not interacted well with the people for the development of the Nigerian state. The delicate balance between the liberty of the people and authority of the government responsible for societal development does not exist. The government wields too much power, and not responsive to the needs of the people. The people dread the government and are too afraid to hold their leaders accountable. Consequently, the unhealthy fear of the government by the people has encouraged the domination, oppression, and continued suppression of the Nigerian peoples. Therefore, it had made the political ball game in Nigerian state parasitic and predatory; and consequently, an instrument of underdevelopment such is the state of Ijumu, Kogi State.
