ABSTRACT

The essay examines Erelu Kuti from a feminist point of view and it reveals that Yerima portrays the heroine, Erelu Kuti as a great African woman. The play departs from the narrow depiction of women in society where men hold sway on state affairs. In other words, she plays great roles in deciding the development and progress of her people. Yerima uses this play to redefine the roles of women in typical African societies. In the first instance, Erelu is presented as a political juggernaut, that is, an influential member of her society. The play Erelu Kuti dramatises the great contribution of her place in the affairs of society. It is rare to find an African woman performing great political role in traditional African society that predates colonialism. Erelu however does when her brother makes her a regent in his absence. One would expect men to oppose her place or reign but she commands great respect among them. For example, she settles series of land disputes and chieftaincy relate problems. She also makes policy for her society therefore she is not presented as most traditional women that solely engage in domestic affairs of their houses.
