Abstract

This study examined the thematic presentation and prevalence of different forms of domestic violence as depicted in Adeolu Adebiyi’s poetry anthology “He(a)r me: Poetry Anthology for Women Survivors”. It focused on instances of sexual abuse, physical abuse, patriarchy and neglect as portrayed in the collection .The overarching aim was to demonstrate the impacts of domestic violence on girls and women in Nigerian society.

The study adopted a  qualitative research method which involved a critical analysis of relevant excerpts from the collected through a radical feminist lens. Radical feminism viewed patriarchy as the root cause of women’s oppression and sought to dismantle male dominance across all spheres.

The study found that sexual and physical abuses are at its peak within Nigerian homes and society. Both forms of abuse have devastating and long-lasting effects on their victims. Also, the study revealed that neglect and Patriarchy have the negative effects of disempowering women, and making them to compromise their basic rights and dignity within intimate relationships.
