ABSTRACT

The species, the abundance and sex ratio of cyclorrhaphan dipterans was investigated in Iguosa area of Benin City with sweep net and sniper insecticide. Two species were recorded. They include Musca domestica (x=99.99), Lucilia illustris (x=1.83) in descending order of impotance. Musca domestica has even distribution from site to site whereas Lucilia illustris was also abundant in Refuse dump. A comparison of mean number of species per site revealed that Musca domestica was the most abundant species. Sex ratio varied from the 1:1 ratio of male to female in various sites: in market (1:1), residence (1:1), restaurant (1:1), and refuse dump (2:1) in Musca domestica; in resident (1:1), in market (1;1), in refuse dump (1:1) and restaurant (0). Analysis of the results indicate that refuse dump provided the best breeding sites for Cyclorrhaphan dipterans in Iguosa, Benin city. Control should therefore be focused on this site.
