ABSTRACT
The species abundance and diurnal activity of Cyclorrhapha diptera in Government abattoir, Ikpoba-okha, Benin City, was investigated between September and October 2019, using a sweep net. Flies were collected from the following sites; residence, refuse, abattoir, animal shed and meat market. Four species of Cyclorrhapha ditera were observed, they include; musca domestica (41.24%), chrysomya bezziana (3.34%), lucillia sericata (43.73%) and ophyra aenescens (11.64%). Lucilia sericata was dominant in the refuse (39.04%) an animal shed (69.73%). Whereas, the meat market, abattoir and residence harbored the rest. There was no discrimination between the morning (9am-11am), midday (11am-1p) and afternoon (1pm-3pm) in the abundance of flies. On individual basis, musca domestica was dominant in residence (100.00%). Ophyra aenescens was dominant in the abattoir (100.00%) and lucilia sericata was dominant in refuse (89.04%).
Analysis of the result revealed that adequate control of musca domestica, chrysomya bezziana, ophyra aenescens and lucilia sericata could be attained in the residence, refuse, abattoir/meat market and animal shed respectively.
