ABSTRACT

Enugu is located at the eastern part of Nigeria. The people are less formally known as "Wawa" people because the people in the area respond "Wa" (used in emphasizing “No”) the people in this area before the discovery of coal had already evolved into a complex society with a decentralized authority for the maintenance of law and order. Before the discovery of coal in this area, the people have engaged themselves in elaborate economic activities which revolved around Agriculture, Trade, and local industries. The discovery of coal and its mining in Enugu by the British Geologist team was a land mark in the development of advanced economic activities in the area. The British were able to obtain land for the coal mining from the indigenous chiefs by signing a land deal on November 15th, 1915 which ceded about ten miles of land to the government. local labor needed at the mine was supplied by the warrant chiefs who got a pay in relative to the number of laborers supplied to the mine. As the mining activity improves, ill relation began to develop between the management of 76 the coal and the local laborers. Reasons have been low wages and condition of services. This subsequently led to different strike and human casualties in the mine. The most notable was the 1949 colliery massacre which resulted to the death of 21 people and 50 injured persons.
