DEVELOPMENT OF PLASTIC CRUSHING MACHINE REQUIRED FOR PLASTIC RECYCLING PROCESS

ABSTRACT

Non-biodegradable polythene and nylon wastes constitute a nuisance in all the urban areas in Nigeria. The aim of this study was to develop plastic crushing machine required for plastic recycling plant using locally sourced materials.

Major components of the plastic crushing machine were designed and engineering drawings were produced. Some of the designed parts were locally fabricated and others were sourced from the shelves. The parts were assembled primarily by electric arc welding process and mechanical joining process. Performance test was carried out on the machine to determine the average weight of small flakes of plastic that could be produced per hour at the designed speed of the machine.

The performance evaluation result showed that the plastic crushing machine was able to crush 35kg of plastic flakes after one hour at the designed speed of the machine of 250 rpm. Hence, the plastic crusher was able to perform its primary function of effectively crushing plastic wastes that were fed into it.
