ABSTRACT

This project introduces the Ngenius Inventory application, aimed at addressing the critical issue of food waste, primarily driven by inefficient resource management practices. With approximately one-third of food produced for human consumption lost or wasted, leading to a substantial economic loss of $680 billion, achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger becomes an even more challenging task. The core objective of this project is to combat this pervasive problem by creating a user-friendly system that focuses on improving resource management, particularly for perishable items within households. The aim is to reduce waste and promote sustainable living practices in Nigerian homes. Ngenius Inventory application was developed in several key phases. First, requirements were gathered to serve as a stable compass which would guide development. Next, predesign planning was carried out to narrow down the essential problems that this app would be designed to solve. Then, the technology stack was selected. Ngenius was built by leveraging advanced technologies such as React Native for the frontend, Firebase as a backend-as-a-service solution, and Expo-Go was used during development to aid testing and adjustments. After technology stack selection was completed, system architecture and design were carried out to create a visually vivid image of the intended end-result, as well as a well mapped tapestry of the applications logic sequence. Finally, the app was developed by utilizing the technology stack that was selected. The Ngenius Inventory application represents a significant stride towards mitigating food waste through improved resource management. By providing users with a user-friendly tool for inventory tracking and management, it fosters responsible resource management practices. While substantial progress has been made in the project's development, future iterations hold the potential for further enhancements, including advanced reporting, improved onboarding processes, and the integration of barcode scanning technology. In essence, this project showcases the transformative power of technology in driving positive change and contributing to the adoption of sustainable living practices on a global scale.
