ABSTRACT
This study examined / identified problem of waste management by suggesting the use of a smart and sustainable method for waste management in the female halls of residence at the University of Benin with the view of evaluating the current waste management practices in the female halls of residence in University of Benin, determining factors contributing to the ineffective waste management practices in the female halls of residence, and the benefits of a smart and sustainable method for waste management in the female halls of residence with aim of recommending possible implementation strategies. It is not an overstatement to argue that the findings of this study reveal that majority of the residents of the female halls of residence of the University of Benin, Nigeria, were absolutely dissatisfied with the current waste management system, Findings also revealed that the most common factors contributing to ineffective waste management practices in halls of residence are lack of awareness about waste management, space for waste storage, lack of proper waste segregation facilities, inconvenient waste management collection schedule amongst others. However, findings also emphasized the benefits of the suggested smart and sustainable waste management which showed that the adoption of the system would lead to a more efficient waste management system increasing recycling and student awareness which is one of the factors affecting the efficiency of waste management systems. However this research although examined the benefits of the smart sustainable 34 waste management system in the female halls of residence of the University of Benin does not show findings on the challenges to the adoption of the smart sustainable waste management system in the female halls of residence.
