ABSTRACT

My research work is the determination of the thickness of laterite in the university of Benin teaching Hospital and its environs using 2-D imaging techniques. I used ABEM SAS terrameter 300 for the investigation. The results were obtained from two traverses.From the available results obtained, the research area has a deposit of laterite of resistivity 800 homs-m at a depth of about 10m in the first traverse and 13m in the second traverse. And the research area may hold a good prospect of laterite. In the course of this survey, laterite which happens to be of high economic importance, especially in constructions, was estimated for its thickness at the university of Benin teaching hospital using the dipoledipole 2-D electrical resistivity imaging technique. By using this 2-D electrical resistivity imaging technique, readings were collected on two traverse each of 250m, and the readings were used to generate geological images. These images together with the knowledge of the resistivity values of common geological materials, was used to estimate the thickness of the laterite deposits in these two traverses( traverse 1, and traverse 6).
