ABSTRACT
This study was done to determine the pH values of some sachet water samples produced and sold in Benin City, Edo State. The samples were collected randomly from local markets, shops and street vendors. This analysis was carried out for (thirty-two) 32 sachet water samples of eight (8) different brands of sachet water, that is, four (4) sachets were collected for each brand. The samples included;UNIBEN, 1 Olivia, Adodocin, Faith Mark, Notre Dame, Mayro, Eso Dam and Uzama sachet water. Each brand of water was labeled from W1 to W8 with a corresponding (A,B,C and D) to differentiate the individual samples of each brand. Most of the pH values obtained aligned with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) permissible limit for drinking water. The pH values of all the water samples ranged from 5.51 to 8.70. Sample W2 (A) with a pH value of 8.70 had the highest pH on its first reading that breached the WHO and SON standards given as 6.5- 8.5(WHO,2007), while W6 had the lowest pH, especially W6 (C and D) of which had values ranging from 5.51-5.61,which fell way below the standard permissible limit for drinking water, and makes it not entirely fit for dinking. Therefore, the quality of the water should be worked on. In continuation, efforts need to be intensified in the monitoring of activities in this rapidly expanding industry with a view of raising and maintaining standards of WHO and SON.
