ABSTRACT

In many countries around the world, including Nigeria, access to portable water has become a mirage. The need to assess the quality of water from the source to ascertain the role of well-constructed methods has now become imperative because of the health impacts on individuals. The aim of this study was to assess the mineral element and microbial properties of the groundwater in Ekosodin and Evoumore communities Groundwater samples were obtained from a total of 20 boreholes situated in various areas, with 10 boreholes located in Ekosodin and another 10 boreholes located in Evoumore communities in benin city, Edo state. The water samples obtained was analyzed for mineral element and microbial properties. The results were obtained using Flame Emission Spectroscopy (FES), Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and Serial dilution technique was used for microbial analysis. The results of the mineral element of the water samples obtained from the different location are as follows; Potassium range (0.6- 1.19mg/l), sodium range (0.77-7.71mg/l), magnesium range(0.02-0.04mg/l), calcium range(0.86-1.63mg/l).While the microbial results had the presence of bacteria isolates namely Staphylococcus aereus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the absence of fungi isolates. The results were all below the WHO standard for groundwater.
