ABSTRACT

For years, our planet earth has experienced five main Mass Extinctions with a possible sixth which might be imminent. These mass extinction that has happened in the past wiped out over 70% of all species both plants and animals that have ever lived, it still remains uncertain what really are the causes of these geologic disasters.

This led to the question asked by Astrophysicists that could the earth’s movement through the Milky way galaxy causes changes in the Earth’s geology.

The Hubble space telescope has been used to deduce various parameters of our Milky Way Galaxy, deducing the mass and diameter of the galaxy, the distance at which the earth orbit the galaxy and also the matter contained in and around the galaxy. Perhaps one of the most surprising discoveries of the 20th century was that this ordinary or baryonic matter makes up less than 5 percent of the mass of the universe. The rest of the universe appears to be made of a mysterious invisible substance called dark matter. Our solar system revolves around the circumference of the disc every 250million years. But the path is not smooth, it's wavy. The earth passes through the mid-plane of the disc once evry 30 million years.

The recognition of this 30 million year galactic cycle is key to understanding why Extinctions happen on a periodic schedule. But it may also explain other geologic phenomena as well. Geologic events such as pulses of volcanic eruptions, mountain climbing, magnetic field reversals, climate and major changes in sea level are possibly caused by the earth's interaction with dark matter in the Galaxy.
