ABSTRACT

Azanza garckeana is an important food and medicinal plant found in tropical Africa. This study was carried out with the aim of determining the bioactive compounds in the ethanol extract of the root of Azanza garckeana plant. The pulverized roots of Azanza garckena were used to obtain ethanol extract and was subjected to Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The result of this study showed the presence of sixteen (16) bioactive compounds with the highest bioactive compound as Bicyclo[3.1.0] hex-3-en-2-one,4-methyl-1-(1-methylethyl)- with a concentration of 75.56% and the least bioactive compound was Methyl stearate with concentration of 0.47% which was reported to have an antioxidant property. Other bioactive compounds in the ethanol extracts of the root of Azanza garckena with biological activities are 9,12,15- Octadecatrien-1-ol, (Z,Z,Z)- with Antioxidant and antibacterial properties, Pentadecanoic acid, 14- methyl-, methyl ester with Antifungal and Antimicrobial properties, 9-octadecenoic acid (Z)-, methyl ester with anti-inflammatory, antiandrogenic, and anemiagenic properties, Hexadecanoic acid, ethyl ester with Anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties and 9,12-Octadecadienoic acid (Z,Z)-, methyl ester with anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, hepatoprotective, antiandrogenic, hypocholesterolemic, nematicide, 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, antihistaminic, anticoronary, insectifuge, antieczemic, antiacne and Anticancer properties. Azanza garckeana roots have useful bioactive compounds that can be exploited for therapeutic purposes.
