ABSTRACT
This study focus on the extraction, determination of phytochemical constituent and the acute toxicity of aqueous extract of Telfairia occidentalis (fluted pumpkin) root. The root of the plant was air dried for 28days in the laboratory before extraction was carried out using decoction method with the use of distilled water as the extraction solvent, concentration of the extract was achieved using rotary evaporator, percentage yield of the extract was 5.93%. The crude extract was then screened for the presence of phytochemicals in the root while acute toxicity was done at different doses of 125, 250, 500, 1000 and 2000mg/kg in mice. The result of the screening indicate the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycoside, phenolic and saponin and the mice group which received the highest dose of 2000mg/kg showed more symptoms of reduced movement and drowsiness. This study indicated that the aqueous extract of the pumpkin root had some level of toxic effects.
