ABSTRACT

Heavy metal concentration in air can be studied using precise bio monitors . In this research, the bark of the Elaeis guineensis tree was used to determine the concentration of heavy metals; cadmium and lead within Benin Metropolis. Four sampling locations were created for this study. The sample collection was done in two batches, within an interval of two weeks . The heavy metal concentration present within the bark of the Elaeis guineensis samples were determined using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The results obtained indicated moderate and low levels of cadmium and lead in all sampling locations in the first and the second batches of samples collected and analyzed. The highest concentration of lead was observed to be in sampling locations SSQ and Isihor with a concentration of 0.45mg/kg while the least concentration was obtained in sampling location capitol with a concentration of 0.25mg/kg reported. The highest concentration of cadmium was observed to be in sampling location Isihor and capitol with concentration of 0.1mg/kg while the concentrations of cadmium in other sampling sites were below detection limits of the machine . Elaeis guineensis was found to be a suitable bio monitor of heavy metals in the environment
