This work was designed to access the levels of hydroquinone and heavy metals in selected skin lightening creams found in Benin-City, Nigeria. It has been proven that Hydroquinone and heavy toxicity in humans is as a result of long-term exposure to pollutants common in the environment such as that air, water, food and numerous consumer products such as the cosmetics used frequently such as body and facial creams. Fifteen cosmetic creams were purchased from a whole sale supermarket in Benin-City, Nigeria with the aim of finding out if the creams contained hydroquinone and heavy metal (Fe) at levels which are harmful to the
populace. Hydroquinone concentrations in the samples were determined using UV/visible
spectrophotometer. The heavy metal content was analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Hydroquinone levels in the creams range from 0.001% - 0.02 % and Fe content ranges from 0.5-1.9mgl-1. In conclusion, the creams do not contain Hydroquinone and heavy metal content at levels that are detrimental to human health.
