ABSTRACT

Cocoa has been one of the main source of income but it value was lost due to the discovery of soil and crude oil contamination by heavy metals, Despite the rapid growth in the production and positive impact of the nation's economy. The production of cocoa and its exportation has reduced on comparing with the percentage of the population involved in agriculture in our country Nigeria. This study is aimed at determining the heavy metals (Cadmium, Lead, Iron and Maganese) present in the cocoa sample which were obtained from Olorunsogo, Awaye and Kajola villages in ile - oluji Ondo state, Nigeria. The levels of heavy metals in the sample were determined using a flame/atomic absorption spectrophotometer (FAAS). The results obtained were subjected to statistical analysis, The results showed high levels of Iron (425.5mg/kg) more than others in the three samples of cocoa seed analysed. The findings from this study showed that all the heavy metals detected were below permitted detection standard limit stated by food and agriculture organization (FAO). Therefore cocoa from these farms are suitable for consultation and exportation.
