ABSTRACT
Although toothpastes are considered as topical cosmetics that are not normally ingested, it is evident that they may contribute to the introduction of heavy metals through the buccal cavity The purpose of this study was to determine the heavy metal concentration in toothpaste brands commonly found in benin city Metal analysis was conducted by using the AAS ( Atomic absorption spectrophotometer ) analysis was carried out on 10 toothpaste brands for five (5) selected heavy metals : Arcenic, Antimony , cadmium, mercury , lead. Results showed that 90% of the toothpaste brands determined were below the permissible limit of WHO, the highest value was obtained in TP4 on the heavy metal lead (was above the permissible limit) with the result provided Just two Brands of toothpaste is recommended for usage because arsenic, antimony, mercury are not detected while cadmium and lead are below the permissible limits for set by the World Health Organization however continuous use of these products can lead to accumulation of these metals in the body.
