ABSRTACT
Fluorides are common ingredients in pharmaceutical products for oral hygiene due to their recognized effect in the prevention of tooth decay. Some major sources of fluoride are fluoridated water, ground water, fluoride supplements, some foods, Dental care products. Exposure to high concentration of fluoride can lead to dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, thyroid problems and neurological problems. This work was done to determine the fluoride content in different brand of toothpaste. The fluoride content was evaluated using SPADNS spectrophotometric method. Five different brands of toothpaste were evaluated in Benin City market which are Oral B, Sensodyne, Close Up, My My, and Colgate and they contain sodium fluoride, synthetic fluorophlogopite and sodium monofluorophosphate. The fluoride content in each toothpaste ranges between 880-1320 ppm, with Close Up having the least value of 880ppm while My My and Sensodyne having the highest value of 1320ppm while Oral b met the standard fluoride content which is 1000ppm
