ABSTRACT

The study investigated the differential item functioning (DIF) of Economics multiple choice test items of the 2021 WASSCE in Enugu State using the variables of sex, school location, socio-economic status, school ownership and school type. To achieve the objectives of the study: determine the number of Economics multiple choice test items of the 2021 WASSCE that significantly function differentially for male and female; urban and rural; high and low SES of parents; public and private; mixed-sex and single sex students. Five research questions were raised and corresponding hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The descriptive survey research design was employed in the study. The population for the study comprised 31,182 students. The sample consisted of 1,200 students selected using the multistage sampling technique. The instruments used for data collection were Socio-economic Status survey questionnaire made up of eight items and Economics multiple choice test items of the 2021 West African Senior School Certification Examination made up of fifty items. The SES questionnaire was validated by two lecturers in Educational psychology and one lecturer in measurement and evaluation. The Economics multiple choice test of the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination was assumed to be valid as it was constructed by experts of a public examination body. The reliabilities of the instruments were determined using test re-test method within an interval of two weeks and coefficient values of 0.82 and 0.79 were obtained. The instruments were administered with the aid of eight research assistants. Factor analysis was used to determine the unidimensionality of the test and the research questions were answered using Raju Area Index and the hypotheses were tested using Chi- square goodness of fit statistic.
