ABSTRACT
Pterocarpus mildbraedii is used in some Nigerian tribes in the treatment of headaches, pains, fever, convulsions, and respiratory disorders.. Various studies have been done to identify antioxidants from plant sources and efforts have been taken to integrate it in conventional therapy. In our present study, antioxidant and phytochemical investigation was carried out using solvent extracts such as ethanol and water. The leaves were collected, washed and air-dried for five (5) days. The leaves were pulverized and extracted(maceration extraction)using distilled water and ethanol respectively. The phytochemical qualitative analysis was determined using standard procedures. The antioxidant properties were evaluated by assessing 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl DPPH free radical scavenging abilities and using ascorbic acid(standard )by adopting standard methods. The results of phytochemicals reveals the presence of flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, tannins, eugenols, glycosides, steroids, terpenoids and phenolics were present in the aqueous extract while only saponins, phenolics, alkaloids and flavonoids were present in the ethanolic extract while the antioxidant studies revealed that DPPH activity was higher in the ethanolic extract compared to the aqueous extracts and the standard (ascorbic acid). Conclusively, Pterocarpus mildbraedii leaf possesses phytochemical constituents and antioxidant which has anticancer, anti-inflammatory properties and neutralizes harmful free radicals in the body.
