Abstract

This study investigates the determinants of induced abortion among female undergraduates at the University of Benin, focusing on their sexual and reproductive histories to understand the prevalence and influencing factors of induced abortion within this population. A total of 430 female undergraduates were selected using a multistage sampling technique, and a descriptive cross-sectional design was employed, utilizing a self-structured questionnaire for data collection. The analysis, conducted using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, revealed that the respondents were predominantly young adults aged 21-25, mostly single Christians, with a significant representation from the Faculty of Education. While 87% reported no history of induced abortion, 78.8% were aware of emergency contraception, and 62.6% had received formal education on contraception, indicating positive awareness but moderate accessibility to contraceptive methods. Financial instability, lack of partner and family support, and personal maturity significantly influenced their abortion considerations, with social stigma and religious beliefs also impacting their decisions. Respondents expressed strong concerns about the physical and psychological risks of induced abortion, particularly regarding future fertility and societal stigma. Although fewer reported personal adverse effects, a high percentage (58.6%) supported sex education as a preventive measure. To address these issues, institutions should foster supportive environments through peer counseling, financial aid options, and resource networks to mitigate the pressures of financial instability and social stigma that can influence abortion decisions. Overall, the findings highlight a general belief in the risks and societal impacts of abortion and suggest the need for enhanced education and accessibility regarding contraception and sexual health among this demographic.
