ABSTRACT
This study investigates the determinants of healthcare services among households in Benin City". The main objective of the study is to determine the determinants of healthcare services among households in Benin City, Nigeria.
The population of interest for this study comprises households residing in Edo State, estimated to be approximately 5,000 households. Simple random sampling technique was used. Three research questions were raised; What is the impact of socioeconomic status on the access and utilization of healthcare services among households in Benin City? What is the influence of healthcare infrastructure availability and quality on healthcare access and utilization among households in Benin City? How do cultural beliefs and practices shape healthcare-seeking behaviors among households in Benin City?
The findings of the study revealed that: socioeconomic status significantly affects healthcare service utilization. Households with higher income levels and educational attainment were more likely to access quality healthcare services. Conversely, low-income households often resorted to traditional medicine or delayed seeking care due to financial constraints. The availability and accessibility of healthcare facilities played a crucial role. Proximity to healthcare centers, availability of medical personnel, and the presence of essential medical supplies and equipment influenced households' decisions to seek care. Many respondents highlighted the inconvenience and additional costs associated with traveling long distances to reach healthcare facilities. The study recommends; Implementing initiatives that improve the economic status of households, such as vocational training and microfinance opportunities, can increase their ability to afford healthcare services. Expanding and upgrading healthcare facilities, particularly in underserved areas, will reduce travel distances and associated costs, making healthcare services more accessible to all households
