ABSTRACT

Background: Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide, characterized by neurological deficits resulting from vascular injury to the central nervous system. Despite advancements in acute care, stroke survivors often experience long-term disabilities and face challenges with community reintegration. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to systematically review the determinants of community reintegration among stroke survivors. Methods: A systematic online search was conducted on PUBMED, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL via EBSCOhost), MEDLINE (via OVID), African Journal Online (AJOL), Web of Science core collection, EMBASE (via Ovid), Pedro. All steps of the process followed the recommendations of the PRISMA flow diagram. Inclusion criteria included cross-sectional studies, non experimental studies, mixed studies, longitudinal studies, population with adult stroke survivors at the level of reintegration, and studies with stroke survivors living in the community with or without impaired functionality. Data were selected and extracted using Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet 2016 version following the eligibility criteria. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) tool for cross-sectional studies, cohort, and case-control studies was used to assess the quality of the included study. Narrative synthesis was used to present the findings of the included studies. Results: A total of 22 studies (18 cross-sectional, 2 longitudinal studies, one cohort, and one case-control study) were included in this review. Depressive symptoms, motor function, balance self-efficacy, fall self-efficacy, stroke severity, participation restriction, and mobility are all factors that contribute to community reintegration. Conclusion: Understanding these determinants is crucial for developing targeted rehabilitation interventions aimed at optimizing community participation and improving outcomes for stroke survivors. Registration: A review protocol was developed and registered with the PROSPERO database, with the ID: CRD42024512150 Keywords: Stroke, determinants, community reintegration, cerebrovascular accidents
