ABSTRACT

Online social networking sites are an increasingly popular place for people to interact with families and friends, colleagues, business contacts and even meet new people to share interests, feelings and emotions at any time and across distance. Some of the reasons why people deceive online include to maintain power of influence, to obtain personal benefit, drive for relationship. There are also some determining factor as to why people deceive and they include time, manipulated deceivers photography, irregular demography, etc. The study include auxiliary information, such as user motive of deceptive behaviour on online social networks, to help make a determination. Because the issue of deceptive behaviour on online social networks is both challenging and relevant, the researcher conducted this design to further facilitate research on the problem. In this research, we have a comprehensive review of identification of motives of deceptive behaviour on online social networks as well as the determinants for motives for deceptive behaviour. Questionnaires were distributed through a message to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter users to get their responses and afterwards the raw data retrieved were coded and imputed into a computer for easy analysis using SPSS version 22.0. Chi-square was used for the hypothesis testing.
