DETERMINANT OF TEACHERS’ EFFECTIVENESS IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL

ABSTRACT

This study examined the determinant of teachers’ effectiveness in public secondary schoolin Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state. Five Research questions and their corresponding hypothesis were raised to guide the study. The study adopted a descriptive research design. The population of the study consisted of 598 teachers with a sample of 119 teachers representing 10% of the total population which were randomly selected using the simple random sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was validated by three experts and then administered on 30 respondents to test for its reliability. The Cronbach alpha statistics was used in determining the reliability of the instrument and the value obtained was 0.833 which implied that the instrument was reliable enough for the study. The mean, standard deviation, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used for the analysis of the data.  The findings of the study showed that teachers had high level of effectiveness in public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area. The findings also revealed that there was a significant difference between teachers experience and their level of effectiveness in secondary school in Oredo Local Government Area; there was a significant difference between teachers’ qualification and their level of effectiveness in secondary school in Oredo Local Government Area; there was no significant difference between teachers’ gender and their level of effectiveness in secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area and there was a significant difference between teachers’ work location and their level of effectiveness in secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area. Based on the finding of the study it was recommended that school administrators should ensure that all forms of distractions in teaching profession should be remove where practically possible. Furthermore, School administrators should ensure that only qualified teachers are recruited and retained.
