DETECTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF Staphylococcus aureus IN ABATTOIR WATER

ABSTRACT

Staphylococcus aureus is recognized for its versality and pathogenic potential. The prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus in abattoir and abattoir environment are notably influenced by hygiene practices and waste management practices. The aim of this study was to assess the physicochemical and bacteriological profile of slaughterhouse water sources in Ewa Road, Benin City.In total, 15 water samples were collected from different points of the slaughter house using sterile plastic containers. The different points of collection include source water, processing water, final rinse water, waste water drain and final effluent samples. The water samples were assessed using physicochemical cultural and biochemical characterization protocols. The antimicrobial susceptibility profile was also evaluated using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. The pH values observed range from 4.30±0.3 - 7.60±0.5. The temperature values observed range from 25.8±0.9 0C - 26.0±1.2 0C. The electrical conductivity values observed range from 113.0±1.4 µs/cm - 1769.0±2.1 µs/cm. The total dissolved solids values observed range 56.0±2.7 mg/L - 1790.0±3.5 mg/L. The salinity values observed range 0±0% - 0.08±0.1%. The mean total heterotrophic bacterial counts of slaughterhouse water range from 30.4 ± 1.7 × 107 - 258.5 ± 1.8 × 107 . The occurrence of S. aureus based on cultural and biochemical characterization showed a prevalence observed of 9/15 (60%). The resistance profile of S. aureus was showed that the bacterial isolates demonstrated highest resistance towards clindamycin and ceftazidime with a resistance rate of 100% while no resistance was observed towards gentamicin. The MAR index of the S. aureus in this study ranged from 0.60 – 0.40. All the isolates were resistant to at least two antibiotics and demonstrated an MAR index ≥ 0.4.
