Migration is a natural event that is driven by the need for man to get the best of everything be it resources, security or better opportunities. The phenomenon of desperate voyage in Nigeria is one that has been a product of history, the government and people's negligence and the continuous decadence in the Nigerian society and economy. The desperation to migrate, in itself is not a bad thing but when illegal and unconstitutional means are being utilized to achieve this, it becomes a problem. It has been noted that there is a rising trend in the phenomenon worldwide, especially from poorer to richer countries. However, those migrating from Nigeria appear to be on the increasing in the recent time. Unregulated and illegal migration can prove to be a serious crises for both the home and destination countries and this has been the implication over time.
This study in line with its objectives has examined, desperate voyage and the Nigeria society, identified the causes of desperate voyage in the Nigerian society, investigated the Socio-economic effects of desperate voyage and examined the government response to desperate voyage.
