ABSTRACT

The project work involved the design of an adequate supply and distribution system that will ensure portable water gets to every resident of the Idowina community in Benin City, Edo State, with proper flow at adequate pressure throughout the distribution.

This study was carried out with the use of the AUTOCAD and EPANET software, as the mode of design for the distribution network scheme. This was done so as to provide adequacy and correctness of results obtained.

The water demand was gotten from standard to be 90LPCD which is the water demand value for a population range of 5000-20000 in a given community or geographical populace. The population data was gotten from the national population commission and Ovia North-East Local Government Area office. The population was projected for a period of 20 years of in order to design an efficient distribution system that can sustain both the present and future water supply of the community. Average water demand was gotten to be 744,030 L/d, with a peak factor value of 1.5, the maximum water demand was gotten to be 13LPS. The nodal demand was gotten by dividing the maximum water demand by the various pipe lengths (equivalent to the length of the road in between two junctions).

The design criteria includes pressure head between the interval of 10-70 m, pipe diameter of 150mm, pipes velocity of 1.5m/s (max. allowable velocity), and the results obtained conform to this allowable velocity. The head loss was calculated using Hazen-Williams formular and it was 26.4m and from the results obtained from Epanet, the headloss gradient was below the calculated value. From this study, it shows that the EPANET software is a sophisticated software for generating hydraulic flow models and its accuracy of data acquisition for this study, can be incorporated for future studies of water distribution network.
