ABSTRACT

The aim of this project is to design and implement a manned vehicle Alcohol and obstacle detection system for highway .This study developed and implemented alcohol and obstacle detection system by using a PIC Microcontroller interfaced with a fusion of two sensors, an ultrasonic and alcohol sensor along with an LCD screen, buzzer and a DC motor to demonstrate the concept. The ultrasonic sensor is mounted on the car bumper and it uses an echo principle to detect the presence of an obstacle above k(ft) on highway and Z(meters) ahead, it continues to send out echo and when an obstacle is detected within its line of sight ,the echo hits the obstacle and returns back to the sensor and through the help of the microcontroller ,signal is sent to the driver by the alarm system. Also the MQ-3 alcohol sensor continuously monitors the drivers breadth to detect the presence of alcohol in the drivers exhalation. .By placing the sensor on the steering wheel, this system has the capacity to continuously check for alcohol and once detected the car ignition circuitry will be switched off through the relay and a warning sent in form of alarm to the driver. Results from testing the system shows that the alcohol sensor showed sensitivity to different samples of alcohol while checking level of drunkness by locking the car ignition circuitry. Obstacle were detected at different ranges and measurements of travel time was taken for a number of distances at different x intervals while alerting the driver. The system showed high efficiency and minimal false alarm
