ABSTRACT

The advancement of digital technologies has created new opportunities for improving conventional educational approaches, especially via gamification. In Nigeria and throughout Africa, the notion of gamification is still relatively novel and inadequately examined in Junior Secondary Schools and its environments. This project presents “BrainPlay” - a mobile gamified learning platform intended to complement, rather than supplant, traditional curricula for Junior Secondary school (JSS1–JSS3) education in Nigeria. BrainPlay incorporates gamification elements like points, badges, leaderboards, and interactive challenges like pattern recognition & sequences (puzzle), math & science challenge quizzes e.t.c that can promote individualized learning experiences that can improve cognitive memory, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving in students' developmental stages. This design and implementation project presents a platform that utilizes an Object-Oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD) methodology, featuring a modular and scalable architecture that guarantees flexibility to changing educational requirements and compatibility within the Nigerian educational frameworks. The system's architecture prioritizes adaptive learning, offering customized feedback and incremental challenges to enhance cognitive growth. The introduction of BrainPlay mitigates the shortcomings of conventional teacher-centered methods by providing a dynamic and engaging additional resource that fosters intrinsic motivation and sustained academic development for students in junior secondary schools in Nigeria.
