ABSTRACT

We all wash our clothes either by machine or by hands. In many developing countries, it is not possible to was clothes with machines due to the absence of the machine itself and also the lack of electricity. A washing machine is a device designed to perform laundry on clothes and sheets. All of these washing machines are powered by electricity but pedal powered machine is human operated and totally eco-friendly. It can be used to save electricity. The fabrication of the pedal powered washing machine was done using plastic and metallic materials. It was designed in a 3 wheeled format, possessing sprockets and chain drives, which transmit motion to the washing tunnel. The pedal is the main motion generator, while the sprocket and chain drive act as transmission. The pedal facilitates the motion of the rare wheels which in turn aids in the rotation of the washing system. The washing gets the transmitted torque from the bearing in the form of rotary motion. In this project, we designed and fabricated such kind of washing machine with both washing and rinsing mechanism and experiments have been carried out to determine the operating conditions at optimum level. From the experimental results, younger individuals use lesser time to travel long distances and the clothes were washed with stains removed. The efficiency E of the machine was calculated as 45%. This was due to the quality of the fabric used. It is recommended that the machine unit can better be made with a polymer material and further research should be carried out for different mechanism that may bring about a much higher sustainable and durable efficiency of the machine over time.
