ABSTRACT
Incineration is burning waste in an enclosure and in a controlled manner. Incineration of waste is better than burning waste in the open air as it is been done in most developing countries which results in air pollution and indiscriminate dumping of wastes. Incineration will reduce indiscriminate dumping of waste and prevent air pollution. This project presents the design, fabrication and testing of 4.5kg/hr incinerator for householdwaste management in Nigeria.
A domestic incinerator which cancombust4.5kg/hrwaste was designed using locally available materials. The manufacturing processes used include cutting, welding, bending, filing, painting. Performance test was conducted by completely burning 4.5kg/hr of each sample waste and the time it took to completely burn the sample waste was noted.Firing was achieved using kerosene. The ash produced during burning was trapped in the ash tray.
Results showed that we had higher efficiency for dry waste than wet solid waste. Thetime taken to burn dry waste is less than the wet solid waste. The combustion chamber was void of leakage. This made the whole process very neat and convenient to the user and the environment. The average time it took for material combustion is 14 minutes making a quick enough process of combustion for a household. Thus the incinerator serves the purpose of dealing with the household wastes.
